Heaven and Man ; Principles and Ideals. This exhibition is about heaven interpreted throughout Korea's history. Heaven was a being that could be seen by naked eye but it had an unknown form. Then, one day, man found certain rules in the heaven. When the sun rises in the east, day begins and when it sets in the west, soon comes night and once a scoop-shaped star sets, a season changes into another. Also, according to the change, Mother nature repeated the circle of life. Such heaven's movement was repeated constantly. It was like a magic. In this way, heaven came to man's life. Part one. Providence Heaven circulates above all things under the sun and has control over all changes. People found the image of an absolute being in such a powerful heaven. The earthly authority regarded himself as the representative who mediated between heaven and people. Since Dangun Wanggeom, Goryeo and Joseon dynasties were proud of newly receiving providence. Goryeo Taejo Wanggeon's birth tale and Yongbi och'on ka made in the early days of Joseon dynasty period are all artistic presentations of that pride. Part two. Recording Changes in the Heaven The emperor who received divine providence had to take the role of heaven and administer the affairs of state, which was in agreement with heaven's intentions. And the starting point was to observe changes of heaven constantly. It was an important mission of an emperor to observe astronomy and record and for this purpose, a government organization consisted of experts was set up. The goal of national astronomical observation station such as Gwansangam was to observe changes of heaven and calculate the calendar. Part three. Study the Laws of Heaven Scholars had to study astronomy to be a man of culture. Philosophy of human nature and natural laws accorded mental values and principles to all things under the sun and at the zenith of it was heaven. Scholars in the chosun dynasty period sometimes produced astronomical machinery and tools themselves to understand heaven's reason. Some of these scholars have accomplished scientific achievements but they were not scientists. For them, such a work was to put their theories into action to be a great scholar.
