Part 1. Traditional Light Lighting changed a big part of our life style. It enabled us to be active at night. Through this we created night life and new culture. Lighting has been evolved through time and its use. But what's been the most widely used was ‘lamps’and ‘candles.’ As for the traditional lightings, first of all, there's a lamp that are composed of an oil cup and a stand to support it, and candle and its stand. In addition, paper or silk lanterns, hanging lamps and floor lamps were also used. Those that were made of wood, porcelain, metal and some other kinds of materials came out in various designs according to their usages and purposes. Lightings were also used for the Royal Ceremonies, Ancestral Memorial Services or wedding banquets. It was also necessary for YeonDeung which is Buddhist Festival as well as DongJe and Gut that are Korean Traditional Ceremonies. Here lightings also carried wishes and hope of the people. Part2. Modern Illumination Drilling for kerosene lamps grew popular and Electric lighting from western countries began. It started the new era of lighting that we use fossil fuel instead of candles, animal or vegetable oil. Modern illumination can be differentiated from traditional ones by their fuel and by the way of turning on and off. The development of the electric lighting showed us a brand new way of illumination. Unlike conventional lighting, we control electricity to adjust the brightness. It's not very certain but it is known that the electric light at Geoncheonggung in 1887 was the first one in Korea. The convenience of the modern lighting attracted the customers at once that corporations jumped into mass production. And soon it created circulation channel. Commercialized lightings made us take a look at their quality and design.
