Simple and Neat

The National Folk Museum of Korea Paju is an open storage facility, built with the purpose of opening folk relics and archive material collections to the public for utilization. The museum prepared its first open storage facility exhibition titled Simple and Neat, in collaboration with 13 craft artists who connect tradition and modernity.

Soban (traditional Korean tray-tables) and bandaji (traditional Korean chests with decorative fittings) have been used in the daily lives of Koreans for decades.
Artisans created soban and bandaji with their delicate skills and honest hearts, taking into account both the aesthetic part and the daily 'utility' of craftworks.
As a result, traces of time and the touch of the artists and users are contained within the craftworks.

Modern crafts are embodiments of the artists’ creed on tradition, demonstrating traditional beauty and delicacy with a modern aesthetic sense.

The artists are reinterpreting tradition in various ways, expanding the scope of their craftworks with diverse shapes, materials, and colors.

This exhibition features the harmony of tradition and modernity, providing a meaningful moment when a total of 49 crafts meet the time-honored heritage that lives on in the storage.
We hope this exhibition can serve as an opportunity for visitors to ruminate on the value of folklore and crafts that have continued on from the past to the present, fully enjoying the traditional beauty within soban and bandaji.

The open storage is a space for the museum's collection to be reinterpreted and utilized by visitors. We hope that the various folklore materials of the National Folk Museum of Korea can be utilized more in various aspects of our lives and arts.

This is a collaborative exhibition with the "Korea Craft Week 2022" by the Korea Craft & Design Foundation.
