![]() Exhibition Overview“Congratulations”
Every two minutes, a new life arrives in Korea.* As they await the birth, people offer their heartfelt prayers for the health and happiness of both mother and child. And when, at last, the tension breaks, a single word of celebration rises in Korea. These words are beautiful. *About one baby is born every 0.3-0.4 seconds worldwide — roughly 2.5 to 3 babies every second. Life does not come easily into the world. For generations, humanity has striven to ensure the safe birth of new life. We have honed the art of medicine, refined our systems and policies, and joined together in heartfelt prayer — a scene as beautiful as life itself. The moment when we, the living, behold new life is, in itself, profoundly sacred. This exhibition shows those shared moments surrounding birth. It tells of the care and effort that, throughout time, have gone into welcoming new life into the world. Through this exhibition, we invite you to see childbirth not as a statistic, but as a miracle — the very beginning of life itself. Part 1 Spaces Where Life Begins and Is SafeguardedCountless places exist in the world, each serving its own purpose. Among them is the sequestered space specially prepared for expectant mothers about to give birth. In earlier times, people took their first breath at home; today, it happens in hospital delivery rooms. There, the mother endures the pain of labor while those around her pray for the safety of both mother and child, applying their knowledge and skill to protect new life. These are the settings where human life begins.
Part 2 Pregnancy-Planning and ChoiceThe introduction of Western medicine to Korea brought great changes to how childbirth was perceived. People began to put greater trust in practical assistance than in divine intervention, and population management ultimately became an important national policy concern. Pregnancy and birth have become planned choices today, reshaping customary practices regarding childbirth. Tradition sometimes fades, sometimes grows stronger, and at times is reshaped in entirely new forms. Yet, certain things never change. What, then, could they be?
Part 3. Birthdays - A Celebration Shared by AllWith one heart, everyone shares the same wish—that the child will be born safely and grow up healthy.
We celebrate the mother, wish the child well, and offer gratitude to the deity who has watched over them both. By preparing food together and exchanging gifts, we rejoice in the arrival of new life. Childbirth is a joy shared by all. |
