What did the westerners think about Korea before the
opening of ports? The special exhibition of ꡔKorea
Sketchesꡕ reveals the realities of our culture through the
eyes of the westerners at the time of the opening of ports,
when Korea, vaguely imagined as an unknown country in the
East, began to unveil herself.
Organized by the theme of “Korea observed by the
westerners, 100 years ago”, this exhibition is divided
into three parts. The first part under the title of
“unveiling hidden country” deals with Joseon imagined by
the westerners and introduces the life and documents of the
westerners visiting Joseon at the time of opening of ports.
In Part II, “Images of Korea as she appeared to foreign
eyes”, images of Korea such as costume, palaces and Court
life, children and women and Korean rituals observed by the
westerners are displayed. The final part, “strange and
exotic Occidental civilizations” is related with the
various modern conveniences of the Occidental civilizations
flowed into Korea with the opening of ports.
