1) Exhibition Overview Approximately 70% of the Korean peninsula is covered with mountains. The pattern of life for the mountain villagers, who have in the past relied on the mountain itself to sustain life, has come to the point where only a trace of what used to be remains, following the drastic change in the environment of their livelihood. It is our hope that through this 『Mountain Village』exhibition we will be able to examine and understand in part the folk artifacts and instruments of the mountain villagers as a reminder of the significance of our traditional culture. 2) Part 1 : The Mountain and It's People Illustrates the story behind the move to the mountains by our ancestors, the meaning of mountain life, and the daily routine of the mountain people through picture panels, also tells the story of mountain life of an elder through picture images. 3) Part 2 : Household Necessities of the Mountain People Looks at the unique lifestyle of the mountain villagers who adapted to the natural environment of the mountains during the 1950's and 60's, through their homes, food, and other household necessities. The kitchen utensils and equipment used for food preparation and made from tree bark etc. shows us the characteristics of the villagers. 4) Part 3 : The Diverse Lives of the Mountain Villagers The mountain people maintained their livelihood through various ways such as fire-field cultivation, hunting, herb gathering etc. We can discover the features of their lives through their diverse tools and molds of their livelihood. 5) Part 4 : The Transformation in the Life of Mountain Villagers In the 1960's and 70's, some mountain villagers cleared their land to raise cash crops and medicinal herbs while others chose to become miners, laborer, or merchants. We can observe the present and future of the transformed lifestyle of the mountain people.
