Special Exhibition
Korean Furniture, Sensuality of Lines
The concise style of Korean traditional furniture is born on the tip of the craftsman's hand and it connotes uprightness as if to represent innocent and modest image of our predecessor. Also, considering the function, furniture contains the livelihood of the period with a minimum of materials and creative skills.
The special exhibition, 'Korean Furniture, Sensuality of Lines' is an opportunity to show previously unseen wood furniture from the museum's collection along with patchworks and paintings as an attempt to reinterpret an aesthetic sense of traditional furniture. Also, the process of manufacturing traditional furniture and contemporarily designed furniture reflecting a classic aesthetic sensibility connecting the past to the present is shown.
- Part 1. Style: Tradition
Traditional furniture in different spaces such as a wooden floored hall, men's study, women's room and kitchen are introduced with patchworks and modern paintings for reinterpretation of the traditional furniture's aesthetic sensibility.
- Part 2. Skill: Inheritance
A reproduction process of a single shelf cabinet created by Park Myeong Bae (Important Intangible Heritage No. 55 Cabinetmaking Artisan) is displayed through a film along with traditional tools.
- Part 3. Modernization: Expansion
Traditional portable dining tables and Ha Ji-Hoon's contemporary design furniture with traditional sensibility are introduced.
Hope this exhibition will provide a place in the Korean folk culture for wood furniture, in which the tradition is inherited and expanded, to become a national brand identity.
