Title 2012 Asian Culture
Period 2012-12-12 ~ 2013-02-11
Venue ExhibitionⅠ

A wedding Ritual(Hollye: 婚禮), one of the oldest ceremonial traditions of human beings, is a ceremony to tie the conjugal knot between a man and woman. Types of the wedding ceremony have been differently presented in almost all Asian nations. A wedding tradition in front of the ancestral altar or proceeded by songs can be good examples of them. Although every nation or people even or period of time has different type of wedding ceremony, there have been quite common messages, desires in the process of wedding: to make a harmonious union; to produce overwhelming joy; to make a happy family; to live long together; and to have a lot of decendants in the family.
In order to compare Korea's wedding tradition with different Asian countries, the National Folk Museum of Korea has carried out a series of folk research projects on wedding traditions in China, Japan, Nepal, and Vietnam since 2007. Based on the fruitful collections from the research, the Museum opens this special exhibition.
The exhibition consists of four parts: prepare a marriage; proceed the ceremony; announce a new start; and lastly, wedding costumes in different countries. Moreover there is a special section of Koreans' wedding stories which the Museum has collected during the research.
We sincerely hope that through exhibition, people can understand the authentic meaning of marriage, and experience different cultures by comparing diverse wedding traditions in neighboring countries.
