Sondol Chuwi, Sondol Baram / Sondol Cold, Sondol Wind "Sondolmok" originated from the day on which an oarsman named Sondol (孫乭) was falsely accused and put to death, and "Sondol Chuwi," meaning "Sondol’s cold," falls around October 20 of the lunar calendar. Thus, "Sondolnal" was the day that Sondol, who helped the king of Goryeo to escape via the seaway to Ganghwado Island, was falsely accused and put to death. Every year the Gimpo city government of Gyeonggi province performs the "Jusa Sondolgong Jinhonje" (舟師孫乭公鎭魂祭) ceremony at Sondol’s gravesite in Sinan-ri, Daegot-myeon to commemorate his unjust execution.
Eternally associated with the legend of Sondol, the cold wind that blows around October 20 of the lunar calendar is called "Sondol Baram" (孫乭風), while the cold weather is called "Sondol Chuwi." The people of Ganghwado Island do not sail when the Sondol wind blows - usually from the end of November to early December of the solar calendar. Season-wise, this time falls around "Soseol" (小雪) and "Daeseol" (大雪)" when the temperature suddenly drops. The islanders long believed that the phenomenon had a root cause and believed in the legend of Sondol. |
