Samwol Samjitnal: Hwajeon-nori Gwangyangdang (廣壤堂), Chagwidang (遮歸堂), Bonghwasan Dodanggut The third day of the third month of the lunar calendar is called "Samwol Samjitnal." In the Goryeo period, it was one of the nine folk customs known as "The Day the Sparrow that Went South Returns," "Samjiil" (short for Samjitnal), "Samsaetnal," or "Women's Day." Since it is the day when odd numbera overlap, and is thus full of yang energy, people would head out of town to picturesque places to enjoy food and see the flowers. In some regions, the custom of going out to enjoy the season is called "Hwajeonnori," "Kkotnori" or "Kkotdarimi" (花柳, 會聚).
Also on "Samjitnal," or the third day, villagers performed the Dodanggut Exorcism to wish for good health and a long life. One of the most representative forms of the ritual has been performed at the Bonghwasan Dodang Shrine located in Jungnang-gu, Seoul. On the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar, as it was believed, the downy hair of a baby should be cut to promote hair growth and a healthy scalp. Villagers would also predict the coming year by looking at the color of butterflies in the mountains and fields. In the South Gyeongsang region, on "Samjitnal," people would cut off locks of hair and throw it in a flowing stream, a local custom expressing wishes for healthy hair. |
